PAYATAS OUTREACH

Jesus Loves Me Feeding and Teaching Ministry:

After the VBS in 2007, the Lord burdened our hearts to continue ministering to the children in Payatas throughout the year. Each Saturday, the church reached out to almost a hundred children by feeding them rice soup and teaching them the Word of God. On Sundays, selected students attend Sunday school in the church and are fed as well. Currently, over 500 children are fed and taught every week.
Because the aim of the church is not only to win people but assist them in their spiritual growth so that they, too, can someday be a witness in their communities, literacy training became an arm of Jesus Loves Me Teaching and Feeding Ministry. Young boys as old as 12 are taught to read so that they can read the Word of God for themselves.

PAYATAS

Payatas is located on the northern part of Quezon City with a population of about 300,000 (1993). The area is known for its dumpsite located at the heart of community, which serves as a source of livelihood for thousands of local residents.

Because of lack of education and employment opportunities, thousands of residents brave hazardous conditions and foul smell to gather and sell recyclable materials from the dumpsite or from trucks that park by the highways. Because each scavenger only earns $2 to $3 a day, even children sift through the garbage to help their parents buy food. It is not uncommon to see young boys and girls walk unsupervised by the side of the busy highway gathering plastic, metal, or bottles to sell in recycling shops.
